How to Get Knight in Command An Army: Evolution, Not Summons

Knight comes from evolution, not the banner: Mercenary to Squire to Knight at level 20 per stage. What each step is worth and when the path pays off.

FAQ

How do you get a Knight in Command An Army?
Evolve a Mercenary. The chain is Mercenary (1★) → Squire (2★) → Knight (3★), two evolutions performed at an evolve station with the unit at level 20 per stage, per player reports. No banner summon is involved.
Is Knight a good unit in Command An Army?
Knight is B tier and the cleanest line-breaker in the roster, but it is also the weakest return of the five documented evolution paths — by the time a fully levelled Knight arrives, S and A tier units start outpacing it in late-game scenarios.
Is Knight the same as Rapier Knight?
No. Rapier Knight is a separate Update 2 unit from the Rapier line with the Parry trait. The evolution chain covered here ends at the regular 3-star Knight and has nothing to do with Parry.
What level does a unit need to evolve?
Level 20 per stage, per player reports, at an evolve station. Both the threshold and the station location are third-party observations, so confirm them on the live unit panel before committing Mastery time.

The Short Answer: Evolve a Mercenary

Knight is not a banner pull. It is the endpoint of the Mercenary evolution chain — the longest of the five documented paths in the game:

Step Unit Stars Tier
Base Mercenary 1★ C
Evolution 1 Squire 2★ B
Evolution 2 Knight 3★ B

Two station visits and two level-20 thresholds stand between the weakest base unit in the roster and a clean line-breaker. The evolution guide documents all five paths; this page is the Knight branch.

The Chain, Step by Step

  1. Hold a Mercenary (1★). It is the lowest-performing combat unit in base form — its only reason to exist is this chain.
  2. Level it to 20 (the evolve threshold per player reports) and evolve at an evolve station → Squire (2★). Squire is acceptable at both offense and defense, but its real value is still the path.
  3. Level Squire to 20 and evolve again → Knight (3★, B tier).
  4. Ascend in parallel. Duplicates of any unit in the chain feed ascension — two copies per level up to Ascension 3 — which permanently strengthens the copy you already keep while you grind the evolutions.

The beginner guide covers the leveling loop that feeds step 2, and the unit tier list ranks the endpoint against everything else you could field at 3 stars.

What Knight Is Worth at the End

Knight is the dedicated line-breaker of the roster: it breaks entrenched formations cleanly and does that one job better than anything near its cost. The problem is timing. The chain is the longest in the game, and by the time a fully levelled Knight arrives, S and A tier units start outpacing it in late-game scenarios.

That makes Knight a hold-first, not a goal-first path: run it if you already hold a Mercenary and spare Mastery time, not as a planned project the way you would run the Scout Rider chain toward Lancer. If you want an evolution endpoint that stays S-tier relevant, the Flame Archer chain finishes a full tier higher at the same star cost.

Knight vs Rapier Knight: Not the Same Unit

Update 2 added Rapier Knight, and the name overlap causes real confusion. They are different units:

Knight Rapier Knight
Line Mercenary → Squire → Knight Rapier line (Parry trait)
Stars 3★ Not published
Role Line-breaking Flanking and mobility
Source Evolution chain Banner summon

Rapier Knight comes from the banner, carries the Parry trait, and has no published star rating or confirmed evolution requirement. This page’s chain has nothing to do with it. The Update 2 overview covers the Rapier line in full.
