Samurai in Command An Army: The Unanimous S-Tier Frontline Unit

Samurai is the most consistent unit in the game — the only S-tier pick all three dated guides agree on. What it does, how to get it and how to build around it.

FAQ

What is the best unit in Command An Army?
Samurai is the most defensible answer. It is the only unit placed in S tier by all three dated guides checked for this site (Pro Game Guides, Gamezebo and games.gg, all September 2026), and it works without a specific setup around it.
How do you get a Samurai in Command An Army?
Through the summon banner. Samurai is a 4-star banner unit with no documented evolution path — dated third-party reports put the Standard Banner at 50 Gems per single summon and 500 for ten, so confirm current prices in the live client before spending.
Can Samurai evolve in Command An Army?
No. None of the five documented evolution paths involves Samurai. Its growth lane is ascension — duplicate copies combine two per level up to Ascension 3 and permanently strengthen the copy you own.
How many stars does Samurai cost?
4 stars. Every unit costs stars against your Star Limit, so a loadout built around Samurai needs cheap support units that actually fit the remaining budget.
Is Samurai still good after Update 3?
No dated third-party guide has re-ranked the roster since Update 3 added five new units, so Samurai holds the last documented S-tier verdict. The reported 0.01% first 5-star sits on the banner, not in a ranked table yet.

What Samurai Is

Samurai is a 4-star frontline unit and the most consistent performer in the documented roster. Three dated third-party guides — Pro Game Guides (September 13), Gamezebo (September 14) and games.gg (September 14) — all place it in S tier, and it is one of only two units (with Lancer) with that unbroken verdict.

Fact Value

Role Frontline
Key strength Consistent sustained damage, counters shield stacking
Evolution path None documented
Growth lane Ascension (duplicates, up to Ascension 3)

Why Samurai Sits in S Tier

Three things separate Samurai from the rest of the 4-star row, and none of them requires a specific setup:

  • It counters shield stacking. The current meta runs a lot of block-damage and shield units, and Samurai’s sustained damage keeps working against compositions that stall other frontliners.
  • It survives both pressure types. Ranged focus fire and melee brawling both fail to remove it quickly, which makes it the piece you can commit first without planning the whole fight around its survival.
  • It asks for nothing. Spartan needs its shield wall managed, Immortal needs flanking coordination, Berserker needs isolated targets. Samurai just does its job in almost any formation.

That consistency is why the theoretical best loadout recorded on the tier list — Samurai, Immortal, Mace and Knight — starts with it.

How to Get Samurai

Samurai is a banner unit. It does not appear on any of the five documented evolution chains, so the summon screen is the only documented source:

  1. Fund the summons with free currency first. The active codes list is the only fully verified free Gem source — fourteen working codes were checked October 7, 2026, led by GUILDFIX at 5,000 Gems.
  2. Use the Standard Banner. Dated September reports put single summons at 50 Gems and ten at 500, with random results and no published rates table — treat both numbers as snapshots and confirm in the live client.
  3. Convert duplicates into ascension. Every duplicate Samurai pulled combines two per level up to Ascension 3, permanently strengthening the copy you keep.

The unit acquisition overview preserves the original banner reporting with its source boundaries, and the reported odds picture got harder in Update 3 — the first 5-star unit, the Laestrygonian, landed at a reported 0.01% pull rate.

Building Around Samurai

Samurai anchors a frontline, which means the rest of the loadout answers two questions: what wins the fight it stalls, and what fits the remaining Star budget.

Slot Job Fits
Frontline anchor Absorb and grind Samurai (this page)
Backline damage End stalled fights Flame Archer, Crossbowman
Flanker Reach enemy backlines Scout Rider, Rapier Knight
Budget fill Fit the Star Limit Cheap starters on evolution paths

The practical rule from the tier list: the strongest affordable squad beats a squad built around a 4-star unit you cannot field alongside anything else. If Samurai alone eats the budget, a 3-star S-tier unit such as Mace or Flame Archer plus two useful starters is often the stronger actual loadout.
